Startup marketing for innovators & challenger brands

Great ideas don't sell themselves

We help startups and innovators turn brilliant ideas into propositions people understand, trust and want.

Innovation needs more than a good idea

Founders naturally spend a lot of time thinking about their solution. Your customers don't. They are thinking about their own problems.

That distinction matters. If your proposition takes ten minutes to explain, if you're trying to sell to everyone, or if your marketing leads with what the technology does rather than why anybody should care, growth becomes much harder. And spending more money promoting it won't necessarily fix the problem.

Before you scale the marketing, you need to know the story works.

  • Who is this really for?
  • What problem are you solving?
  • How important is that problem to the customer?
  • Why would they change what they're doing today?
  • What makes your approach different?
  • What evidence will make them believe you?
  • What is the simplest way to test those assumptions?

These are marketing questions, but they're also business questions. That's why we think marketing should start much earlier than the launch campaign.

We understand the startup journey because we work with founders on it

We don't just work with established businesses that already have marketing teams and healthy budgets. A big part of our work is helping startups, founders and innovators much earlier in the journey.

We have supported entrepreneurs and innovation programmes connected with Imperial College, Barclays Eagle Labs and the Health Innovation Network, helping businesses think more commercially about their market, audience, proposition and marketing.

That experience matters. Because an early-stage innovator doesn't need a 60-page marketing strategy and a huge monthly agency retainer.

You need to work out what matters now, what can wait, and what you need to prove next.

That's a very different marketing challenge.

From innovation to commercialisation

Bridging the innovation gap

There's often a missing step between innovation and commercialisation. You can have strong technology, intellectual property, clinical thinking or a genuinely novel service, but the market still needs a reason to care. We help connect the two.

1

Innovation

What have you created?

2

Market

Who has a problem worth solving?

3

Proposition

Why should they care about your solution?

4

Evidence

What gives them confidence that it works?

5

Story

How do we explain it simply enough that people understand and remember it?

6

Action

What needs to happen next to turn interest into commercial opportunity?

Start small. Learn quickly. Build what you need.

Early-stage startups have to make choices. You probably don't have an unlimited marketing budget. You may not have an internal marketing team at all. That shouldn't stop you from getting good strategic advice.

It just means the support needs to match where you are. We offer scaled ways to work with OVM, from focused strategic support for businesses at the beginning of their journey through to deeper strategy and execution as the business grows.

You don't need to buy everything. You need the right intervention at the right time.

That approach is consistent with how we run our workshops. We take the time to understand the individual challenge, then shape the work around the organisation's objectives, resources and stage of growth.

Catalyst programme

OVM Growth Lab

Our catalyst programme for innovators and growing businesses

You don't always need a huge marketing strategy or an agency retainer. Sometimes you need to stop, challenge the thinking and get clear on what will actually move the business forward.

The OVM Growth Lab is our catalyst programme designed to do exactly that.

We work with founders, innovators and growing businesses to take a fresh look at the opportunity and turn uncertainty into a clearer path forward. Depending on where you are in your journey, we'll explore the questions that matter most:

Who is the real market for what you're building?

What problem are you solving and how important is it?

Is your proposition clear enough?

Why should somebody choose you instead of doing nothing or choosing an alternative?

What assumptions are you making that still need testing?

What evidence do you have, and what do you need next?

Where should you focus your limited time, budget and energy?

The point isn't to create more activity. It's to help you make better decisions before you spend more money.

You leave with greater clarity around the opportunity, the gaps that need addressing and the practical next steps that can move the business forward.

Case study

Sometimes the most valuable thing we can do is challenge the idea

Good advice isn't always telling you how to market something. Sometimes it's asking whether you should market it yet.

One founder came to us with a business idea and questions about how best to take it to market. Rather than jumping straight into channels and tactics, we explored the idea from both directions.

We expanded it to understand its wider potential and what would be required to grow it. Then we stripped it back to its simplest form and looked at how it could deliver genuine value to a specific customer group.

The result was greater clarity around the potential of the idea and, just as importantly, a clear set of questions and next steps to address before moving towards launch.

Explore the ambition. Challenge the assumptions. Find the simplest credible next step.

What our clients say about us

Strategy workshop

By the end of our workshop, I had a much clearer understanding of my business’s potential and a well-defined set of critical next steps to address before moving toward a launch.

It was an incredibly valuable workshop, and I highly recommend Dan to anyone with an idea but uncertain about how to develop it into a solid business plan. On top of his expertise, Dan is genuinely humble and a pleasure to work with!

Marketing strategy

From day one, Dan and Natalie knew exactly what we should be focusing on to achieve our short-term and long-term objectives.

They have gone into great detail to understand what our objectives are in various phases of our strategy. I have never seen a marketing agency spend so much time with a client to formulate a proper strategy.

They are very professional, hardworking and supportive.

Startup marketing that grows with your business

What you need at idea stage won't be what you need after your first customers arrive. And it certainly won't be what you need when you're ready to scale. So our support can grow with you.

At the beginning, that might mean joining the OVM Growth Lab, our catalyst programme designed to help you challenge the thinking, sharpen the opportunity and work out what needs to happen next.

As you develop, we can help with customer understanding, positioning, strategic narrative, value proposition and go-to-market planning.

When you're ready to activate, our wider team can support content, PR, campaigns, digital, websites, creative and lead generation.

And when marketing becomes a bigger part of the business, we can provide fractional strategic leadership or act as an extension of your team.

Challenger brands need challenger thinking

You may be entering a market dominated by much bigger organisations. Good. You probably can't outspend them.

But you can be clearer. More relevant. Closer to your customers. Faster to learn. More willing to challenge the way things have always been done.

Marketing can help turn those advantages into a position people recognise. Not by making you look bigger than you are. By making it much clearer why you deserve attention.

Ready to start?

You don't need to have all the answers

You might have an idea. A prototype. Some early customers. A successful pilot. Investment. A team starting to grow. Or simply a nagging feeling that you've built something valuable but haven't quite worked out how to explain it.

You bring the innovation. We'll help you work out how the market sees it.
