Some of you reading this will have seen over the bank holiday weekend we promoted and participated in the Tour de Tim. The challenge was in honour of my fiancée’s dad Tim Balch, who tragically passed away 10 years ago having suffered from motor neurone disease. For those of you unaware of MND, it is an incurable illness that causes a weakening of the muscles and nervous system, causing your body to shut down.

Tim was a prominent figure in the non-league football scene on the south coast as both a goalkeeper and a manager. To mark what would have been his 64th birthday, we cycled 105 miles from each of the 12 football clubs he played for, or managed across Dorset and Hampshire. The gruelling route took us from Southampton, through the New Forest, up over the steep Purbecks and back to the rolling hills north of Bournemouth, all in the baking heat of the bank holiday.

Suffice to say, it was an unforgettable and truly testing weekend, filled with incredible support from friends, family and each of the football clubs involved. As it stands the total raised for the MNDA sits over £5,300!

Here is a list of where that money will go:

  • £10 will provide a young person with a “So what is MND?” guide, helping them better understand the disease
  • £80 will buy software to enable someone to bank their own voice
  • £100 fund laboratory equipment for two days’ vital research into finding the causes of MND
  • £500 goes towards the cost of a ceiling hoist to help someone continue to live in their own home

Thank you again to everyone who was involved, the overwhelming support meant the world to our family.
